Film lives here

The Cinematheque is a place for everyone. A home for moving images that keeps film and television culture alive. As one of Europe’s leading institutions, we are dedicated to preserving and sharing the audiovisual heritage. Our archives form the heart of the Cinematheque – but we are much more than that: a cinema, an exhibition venue, and a driving force in film education. We host film festivals, conduct research, restore films, and make them available for loan. In our library, film can be read. Moving images spark conversation: our doors are open, both on-site and online.

A core part of our work is the engagement with queer film culture. Collections from key figures of queer German cinema – such as Rosa von Praunheim, Ulrike Ottinger, Lothar Lambert, and Elfi Mikesch – have found a home in the Cinematheque.

Until 13 September 2026, the exhibition Inventing Queer Cinema explores the history of queer cinema. At its center are films and the people who make them: filmmakers, festival organizers, cinema operators, and distributors who have shaped and continually reinvented queer cinema in Germany since the 1970s. A special focus is placed on Berlin as a hub of queer film and subculture, expanded by perspectives from international artists. Inventing Queer Cinema tells a story of resistance, solidarity, and innovation that extends into the present. The exhibition invites visitors to carry this story forward and to rediscover queer cinema again and again.
