A theater in the heart of Berlin

Situated in the heart of Berlin’s Charlottenburg district, the Renaissance Theater stands as the sole fully preserved Art Deco theater in Europe. Over its century-long existence, this venerable stage continues to offer an authentic theater experience reminiscent of 1920s Berlin. Through a deliberate blend of literary excellence and entertainment, the theater has successfully established itself as an actor’s theater throughout every era of its existence. While the Renaissance Theater doesn’t maintain a permanent ensemble, renowned actors have significantly shaped the face of the stage through recurring engagements.

Literary and musical events

In addition to the grand productions within the theater hall, regular readings and other literary and musical events are presented in a second venue, the Bruckner Foyer, designed in the Art Deco style.

Focus of the Renaissance Theater

Under the artistic direction of Guntbert Warns, the theater places its focus on contemporary international dramas with original and premiere works by award-winning authors, as well as significant pieces from historical eras, especially the Renaissance, with modern adaptations. Two other focal points are music dramas and productions related to Berlin. Supported by funding from the state of Berlin, this private theater critically engages with current societal developments while providing entertainment. In addition to this, the theater actively seeks direct engagement with the audience through regular discussion series, audience dialogues, and the Young Salon.

Four to five productions per season

Every season, the theater, which J. W. Preuß, one of the most profound connoisseurs of the Berlin theater scene, referred to as “Germany’s most sophisticated private stage,” produces four to five original productions, including the set designs produced in its own workshops. Furthermore, the theater showcases guest performances and the adoption of plays from other theaters. Through its extensive touring activities in German-speaking regions, the Renaissance Theater garners strong recognition beyond the borders of Berlin.
