The Kunsthalle Wien is Vienna’s Art Hall in Museumsquartier. It is an exhibition space for contemporary Viennese art. A place to engage, experiment, and implement action and change – a building in which current social issues are dealt with.
Kunsthalle Wien is dedicated to art and its role in processes of social change. It produces exhibitions, conducts research on artistic practices and supports local and international artists. It strives to anchor its knowledge of international contemporary art in and for Vienna, and advocates for the fruitfulness of artistic thinking in all areas of public life.
For this reason, WHW would like to place Vienna in all its diversity at the center of its program and stimulate an exchange with geographies, histories, and forms of knowledge that receive less attention and recognition than what happens in the major capitals of the West.
Since it opened in 1992 – originally as a makeshift structure shaped like a container, today with locations at the Museumsquartier and Karlsplatz – Kunsthalle Wien, as an urban institution, presents national and international contemporary art. In this respect, it is both a location for established art and negotiation site for current societal issues as well as future developments.
Today, it is located in the middle of the museum quarter and in Karlsplatz and offers thematic group exhibitions as well as exciting individual exhibitions. A fascinating look into the international art scene.
