The Raimund Theater was opened in 1893 and bears the name of the Austrian playwright Ferdinand Raimund. Originally intended as a venue for folk plays, operettas, and classical theater forms, the theater quickly developed into a culturally significant stage in the German-speaking world.
In the 1980s, the theater underwent extensive renovation and was subsequently incorporated into the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien (VBW) theater group. Together with the Ronacher and the Theater an der Wien, it has since become a central pillar of the Viennese musical scene. Since then, the theater’s program has regularly featured internationally successful productions as well as high-quality VBW productions.
What makes the Raimund Theater so special is the harmonious interplay of historic architecture and contemporary theater technology. Visitors can look forward to the following:
Over the years, the Raimund Theater has been the venue for numerous musical milestones, including A Chorus Line, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Dance of the Vampires, and MAMMA MIA!—productions that have thrilled musical fans worldwide and had a significant impact on the history of the theater.
