For over two hundred years, the Theater an der Wien has stood for the renewal of musical theater.

Many important operas, singspiels, operettas, and musicals were premiered here. Founder and theater impresario Emanuel Schikaneder had the house built in 1801 in the spirit of Mozart.

Since then, contemporary and entertaining music theater has been presented here, anchored between tradition and innovation, with a standard that visionary artists and specialized orchestras carry in stagione. The artistic management team sees itself as an ambassador and pioneer of universal music drama. With its versatile repertoire, it focuses on old and new works and rarely or never-performed rarities from various epochs and styles in exciting new productions and virtuoso concert performances.

Extensive renovation of the Theater an der Wien

To preserve the unique history and aura of the Theater an der Wien, the historic building has been extensively renovated since March 2022. The result is one of the most modern opera stages, which meets the highest standards and requirements for the safety and comfort of visitors, artists, and staff, and guarantees contemporary, modern performance operations in the long term.
