History at Checkpoint Charlie

Experience a Berlin cityscape that no longer exists – the Berlin Wall in an 18-meter-high rotunda at the historical Checkpoint Charlie. The Berlin artist Yadegar Asisi depicts with the panorama picture DIE MAUER (The Berlin Wall) the life in and in the shadow of the Wall on a fictitious autumn day in the 1980s. The panorama – on a scale of 1:1 – takes the visitor on a time travel in the past of the divided city of Berlin. From a visitor platform, you experience in a unique way how everyday life was in the shadow of the Berlin Wall.

Step into history

As a visitor to this 360° installation space, you take the position of a West Berlin citizen living in Berlin-Kreuzberg directly opposite the Berlin Wall with a view of the GDR death strip and can see right across into the GDR. You become part of an unreal scenery of dilapidated and squatted apartment buildings near the wall strip with punks, wall artists, tourists, and border guards.

Photo exhibition

The panorama experience is supplemented by a photo exhibition containing over 80 photos by contemporary eyewitnesses, giving the visitor personal insights into the period of the construction and the fall of the Wall. In addition, picture boards relate the biography of the artist and his approach to creating the panorama DIE MAUER.
