For over two hundred years, the Theater an der Wien has stood for the renewal of musical theater.
A large number of important operas, singspiels, operettas, and musicals were premiered here. Founder and theater impresario Emanuel Schikaneder had the house built in 1801 in the spirit of Mozart.
Since then, contemporary and entertaining music theater has been presented here, anchored between tradition and innovation, with a standard that is carried by visionary artists and specialized orchestras in stagione. The artistic management team sees itself as an ambassador and pioneer of universal music drama and, with its versatile repertoire, focuses on old and new works as well as rarely or never performed rarities from various epochs and styles in exciting new productions and virtuoso concert performances.
Extensive renovation of the Theater an der Wien
In order to preserve the unique history and aura of the Theater an der Wiens, the historic building has been undergoing extensive general renovation since March 2022. During the two-year renovation period, the theater will move to Hall E in the MuseumsQuartier Wien for two seasons starting in fall 2022. The reopening of the building in its new splendor is planned for fall 2024.
